ACW Campaign - Part Twenty Five.


The unequal artillery duel proceeds. Rebel troops suffering some casualties from shrapnel, also a hit on one of the factory buildings starts a fire. It will need to be dealt with quickly to prevent it spreading to the whole building.



1st US Cavalry along with 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry chase off 9th Virginia Cavalry, being careful to stay out of musket range.



Wise's Legion Cavalry also pull back from the advancing Union infantry and cavalry.



1st New York cavalry accompanied by 5th US Cavalry look on as the rebel horse skedaddle.



The Union troops begin to take up position before the north west wall.



A potential second attack wave is now in position behind the guns and the first attack wave on the north east wall.



Plenty of Union reserves to be deployed, if and when, required.



Looking north east from the town of Hampstead.



Defenders and attackers can be seen.



Union reserves await orders as the artillery barrage continues.

Wise's Legion cavalry pull back and prepare to dismount.



1st New York and 5th US Cavalry move around behind the infantry of 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, intent on causing mischief to the now dismounted Wise's Legion Cavalry.



Wise's Legion Cavalry take up a firing position at the corner of the wall. In the distance can be seen 9th Virginian Cavalry, also dismounted facing off against the advancing Union cavalry of 1st US and 6th Pennsylvania.



'Here they come boys!'



Carter's Battery opens fire on the Union lines.



95th Pennsylvania take casualties.



The factory building takes a second hit and the fire spreads.



'A' Battery, 1st Massachusetts is temporarily put out of action in counter battery fire from 4th Virginia Battery.



With the factory building now ablaze, the rebs will have to vacate part of the wall closest to the inferno.


General Franklin bides his time to order a full assault on both the north east and north west walls.
